In the past, youtube has been known for limiting resolution to conserve bandwidth, but this may not be the case for long. Youtube is now in the process of testing and developing the steps required to provide higher quality videos. The project was announced last year by the Youtube co-founder Steve Chen, and now appears to be in the earliest stages of deployment. By simply adding &fmt=6 onto the end of the video’s URL, you are able to view the video in high resolution and the difference is amazing!
Low resolution: http://youtube.com/watch?v=CQzUsTFqtW0
High resolution: http://youtube.com/watch?v=CQzUsTFqtW0&fmt=6
It seems that Youtube will now convert all newly uploaded videos about an hour or so after uploading into high resolution, and they are also in the process of converting all of the millions of other videos hosted on their site into high resolution, although this may take quite along time to do. It seems so far that about 1 out of every 5 videos are now available in high resolution.
