Jump-starting a car isn’t as difficult as many people believe it to be. All you need are:

• Another Car
• Jumper Cables
• Rubber Gloves (optional)

Before you start make sure that the battery cuplings aren’t loosly attached to the battery. I have had a battery fully charged but the cuplings where just loose resulting in the battery appearing to be dead. Also make sure both cars are turned completely off and the keys are out of the ignition.

The first thing you need to do is attach the cables in the following order

1. Attach the positive (red) clamp of one end onto the positive terminal of the dead battery
2. Attach the other end of the positive (red) clamp to the Positive terminal of the Charged (not dead) Battery.
3. Attach the negative (black) clamp to the negative terminal of the charged battery.
4. Attach the other end of the negative (black) cable to the engine block of the car with the dead battery. Look for unpainted metal surfaces and be sure it will clear anything moving when the car starts. If the dead car doesn’t take the charge then attach it to the negative terminal of the dead battery.

Stand back from engine bay of the cars and start up the car that is providing the jump.

Wait about 3-5 minutes for the dead car to receive the charge and start the dead car. If the car doesn’t start, then wait a few more minutes and try again. If the car refuses to start, then tough luck, you need to call in for a tow.

Some good advice is to always carry jumper cables in your car. It is likely that a person who is nice enough to offer a jump will sometimes not have cables. You can remove this risk by carrying a par of your own.
