Gasoline?Never touch the stuff!

By Tanner Brown • Mar 20th, 2008 • Category: Lead Story, News

Say goodbye to gasoline for good! After years of car companies attempting to produce a worth while alternative fuel car, Tesla Motors has finally achieved the seemingly impossible. This electric-powered anomoly is powered by a single lithium-ion battery pack, and will travel 221 miles on a single charge, and has the efficiency equivalent of 135mpg, can go 0-60mph in 3.9seconds, boasts a beefy 248 horse power (185 kW), has a redline of 13,000 rpms, has the basic chasis technology of a Lotus Elise and has a body made of painted carbon fiber. Sounds great right? Well even if you do have the $100,000 U.S. to fork out to buy this electric super-car, you would have to get put onto a waiting list, and shouldn’t expect to get your car for over a year.

One of the things that makes this new technology so intense, is that because it is electric, you get peak torque at 0 rpms, so you are at peak power just sitting at a red light, and it continues to be able to generate power all the up to the red-line, instead of the power cutting out significantly at a certain rpms like regular engines do.

So in reality, this car is going to change the way we look at cars. It could single-handedly put in motion a movement that could put a stop to our dependency on foreign oil, as well as clean up our environment. I raise my glass to the guys at Tesla for such a great job!

Specifications

The Tesla Roadster’s specs illustrate what it does (0 to 60 mph in under 4 seconds) - as well as what it doesn’t (zero emissions, zero motor oil). With one moving part in the motor, no clutch pedal, and two gears, it’s not only a joy to drive, but to own as well. There is no motor oil to change; no filters, belts, or spark plugs to replace; no oxygen sensors to mistrust before an emissions test.
